We are pleased to announce the International Workshop on Speech, Music and Mind 2018
(SMM18): Detecting and Influencing Mental States with Audio. This one-day, satellite workshop
of INTERSPEECH 2018 will bring together, from both academia and industry, communities interested
in understanding the interplay between the mind and sound/music/ speech. The focus of this workshop
is to further the state of the art in detecting and influencing mental states with audio. Applications
to diverse contexts, especially the Indian context or languages and music genres are of special interest.
In line with the theme for INTERSPEECH 2018 (Speech Research for Emerging Markets in
Multilingual Societies), the emphasis is on (but not limited to) the below topics, arranged according
to the workshop program.
• Detecting stress, emotion or mental states of people from speech :
o Non-acted speech databases
o Multiple languages (e.g. Indian languages)
o Realistic environments (e.g. call centers, workplaces)
• Use of other modes such as video and sensor data, preferably from wearable sensors, in addition to speech
o Effects of Audio on stress, emotion and mental states of people
o Diverse music such as folk, classical and film genres
o The dependency on cultural backgrounds is of special interest
o Use of audio cues to influence mental states /human behavior
• Other topics that are of interest in the context of stress, emotion and mental states
o Novel signal processing or machine learning techniques
o Sounds at inaudible frequencies
o Novel protocols for assessing mental states, inducing stress or emotion
o Applications related to the above topics
