Professors Martha Palmer, Jim Martin, and Jordan Boyd-Graber from the University of Colorado are inviting applications for a post-doctoral fellow in the field of computational semantics, beginning on or before September 1, 2016.

Job Description: Research Associate - 03628

Research Faculty involved in Natural Language Understanding/Automatic induction of semantic hierarchies/Smart Data Selection) at the CLEAR Center, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO

The CLEAR Center in Colorado has a one-year Research Associate ("postdoctoral researcher") position associated with an NSF project to improve natural language understanding of domain specific text from the geosciences.

Our approach encompasses the use of linguistic annotation for developing training data for supervised machine learning as well as reliance on rich lexical resources. We are quickly porting our annotations to this new genre as well as other genres, and automatically enriching and extending our lexical resources. Central research challenges for these projects include domain adaptation, intelligent annotation, and information extraction, including but not restricted to named entity recognition, terminology extraction, and relation extraction. Experience with supervised and semi-supervised machine learning methods, including approaches based on bootstrapping, active learning, or distant supervision are key. A strong interest in supporting open-source NLP tools and resources, especially CLEARTK, is also essential. Strong programming and implementation skills are required.

Responsibilities will include assisting in the project management (e.g., publications, meetings) as well as development of innovative techniques. There are opportunities to get involved with other ongoing research projects and to extend the appointment for an additional year.

Applicants for the position of Research Associate ("Postdoctoral Researcher") must have a PhD in a relevant discipline, and a strong background in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing.

Salary Scale: $65,000 - $75,000

The postdoctoral fellow will be appointed initially for 12 months beginning in Fall 2016. There is a possibility of a second year.

Closing date for applications: open until positions are filled.
