Two-year, Research Associate (“post-doctoral researcher”) position, CU-Boulder, Computational/Corpus Linguistics.
The Research Associate will work with Dr. Andrew Cowell, a specialist in language documentation and Native American languages. In addition to the Research Associate position, Dr. Cowell has an NSF/NEH Documenting Endangered Languages grant for the two-year period, which will fund two graduate student RA positions, so the Research Associate would work as part of a larger team, focused on creation and augmentation of interconnected textual and lexical databases of the Arapaho language, as well as application of computational and corpus techniques to generate new findings using the databases.
Dr. Cowell currently has a video database of 50,000+ lines of Arapaho natural discourse, time-aligned in ELAN, interlinearized (including part-of-speech labeling) and annotated. This is one of the largest current databases of natural discourse in an indigenous language. The project for the next two years will involve creation of a usage-based lexical database and dictionary, additional hand and automated annotation of the textual database (especially for dependency relations), and studies of best practices in annotation for Algonquian languages generally, to maximize usability of the databases for external researchers.
CU’s Dept. of Linguistics also hosts two professors in computational linguistics, Dr. Martha Palmer (semantics and natural language processing) and Dr. Mans Hulden (computational phonology, beginning in Fall, 2014), as well as a strong connections to the Computer Science Dept. and the Institute of Cognitive Sciences. This position is an exciting opportunity to extend corpus and computational techniques to a typologically very interesting agglutinating, polysynthetic language, working with a specialist in that language.
Salary: $45,000/yr + $5,000/yr in research funds (for travel, equipment, etc.). The Research Associate would also teach one course per year for the department, in his/her area of specialty. The position would begin August 1, 2014.
