The school will be held with a special focus on applications in humanitarian, medical, and health domains.

The 12th Russian Summer School in Information Retrieval (RuSSIR 2018) will be held on August 27-31, 2018 in Kazan, Russia. The school is co-organized by the Kazan Federal University and the Russian Information Retrieval Evaluation Seminar (ROMIP).

The main goals of the RuSSIR school series are to enable students to learn about modern problems and methods in information retrieval and related disciplines; to stimulate scientific research and collaboration in the field; to create an environment for successful networking between scientists, students, and industry professionals.

RuSSIR 2018 will offer the following keynotes and courses:

Keynotes:
* Carlos Castillo (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) -- “Crisis Informatics”, “The Biases of Social Data”

* Cathal Gurrin (School of Computing, Dublin City University) -- “The Information Retrieval Challenge of Lifelogs and Personal Life Archives”

* Henning Müller (University of Geneva) -- “Evaluation of IR systems and multi-modal retrieval in the medical domain”

Courses:

* Valentin Malykh, Mikhail Burtsev (Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology) -- “Conversational AI through Deep Learning”

* Rishabh Mehrotra (Spotify Research) -- “Learning from User Interactions”

* Guido Zuccon (Queensland University of Technology) -- “Health Search”

* Harrie Oosterhuis (University of Amsterdam) -- “Learning to Rank and Evaluation in the Online Setting”

* Prasenjit Mitra (Pennsylvania State University) -- “Retrieving Information Interactively Using Natural Language”

Summer school participants will be provided with space and timeslot to present their current research projects/ideas at poster sessions to get feedback from the fellow students and the lecturers.

In addition to educational and social activity, the school will have a versatile social program.

A limited number of grant partially covering travel expenses for international students will be available. Deadline for grant applications is *June 10, 2018*. You can indicate that you need a grant and provide motivation in the application form.

Due to visa process could take up to several weeks, we advise you to apply in advance. Deadline for applicants who is required to have a visa to visit Russia is *July 1, 2018*. PARTICIPATION IN THE SCHOOL

The target audience of the school is advanced graduate and Ph.D. students, post-doctoral researchers, academic and industrial researchers and developers. The school will admit up to 100 qualified and motivated candidates on competitive terms. The working language of the school is English. Participation is free of charge, a limited number of travel/accommodation grants will be provided.

- Name, country of residence and affiliation.

- One paragraph description of what you expect to gain from attending RuSSIR 2018.

- A short paper.

- Curriculum vitae.

Short papers are two-page pdf documents in English that describe applicants' early-stage, ongoing or completed research/educational projects. Already published кesearch results and current project descriptions are also acceptable. The template for above-mentioned papers could be found here: http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template . Short papers will be presented during poster sessions at RuSSIR 2018.

ABOUT RUSSIR

The first RuSSIR took place in 2008 and since then has evolved into a popular academic event with solid international participation. Previous schools took place in Yekaterinburg, Taganrog, Petrozavodsk, Voronezh, Yaroslavl, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg, and Saratov. Courses in previous editions of RuSSIR were taught by many prominent researchers in information retrieval and related disciplines.

ABOUT THE VENUE

Kazan is one of the largest cities in Russia, it is sometimes called the third capital of the Russian Federation.
