CALL FOR PAPERS

ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology: Special Issue on Paraphrasing
http://tist.acm.org/CFPs/TIST-SI-Paraphrasing.doc

Paraphrases are alternative linguistic expressions that convey essentially the same meaning. The ability to recognize and generate paraphrases is increasingly seen as a core problem in natural language processing research, with implications for a broad range of applications, including web search, information extraction, dialog systems, and machine translation.

Yet despite the importance of modeling the relationship between two pieces of superficially distinct text that “mean the same thing”, research on paraphrasing has so far lagged behind real-world applications. Despite recent attention on this topic, there still lacks some principled platform on which more research can be done, such as a widely-accepted evaluation metric.

This special issue of the ACM-TIST is intended to bring together innovative research and applications on paraphrasing, with the objective of helping to better define the field. We encourage submissions on the applications and systems aspects of paraphrases in various NLP tasks, as well as proposals for unifying frameworks that enable the definition of a generic task and automatic evaluation.

TOPICS

This special issue is devoted to work that significantly advances the state of the art in natural language paraphrasing. We invite original and unpublished submissions, covering any of, but not limited to, the following topics.

- Algorithms for paraphrase recognition and generation
- Evaluation of paraphrasing techniques, especially automated metrics
- Methodologies for rapid training-test cycles to instrument paraphrasing algorithms
- Experience report on large-scale shared paraphrase corpora or tasks
- Applications of paraphrasing techniques in real-world NLP tasks

Submissions are not limited to work on English corpora. Papers should be submitted through the Manuscript Central system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tist. Please select “Special Issue: Paraphrasing” as the manuscript type. Each paper will be reviewed by at least three expert reviewers. Further details on manuscript preparation as well as publication policies are available on the ACM TIST Web site at http://tist.acm.org/authors.html.
