ACL 2017 - report by Pushpak Bhattacharyya.

In 2017 there will be a joint ACL and NAACL conference in the Americas. Initial steps towards the organization of the conference have begun. The overseeing committee is:

ACL reps:

Dragomir R. Radev, University of Michigan, USA: radev@umich.edu

Graeme Hirst, Computer Science University of Toronto, Canada: gh@cs.toronto.edu

Pushpak Bhattacharyya, IIT Bombay, India: pushpakbh@gmail.com

Jian Su, Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore: sujian@i2r.a-star.edu.sg

Priscilla Rasmussen, Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL): acl@aclweb.org

NAACL reps:

Emily M. Bender, University of Washington, USA: ebender@uw.edu

Hal Daumé III, University of Maryland, USA: me@hal3.name

Michael White, Ohio State University, USA: mwhite@brutus.ling.ohio-state.edu

Joel Tetreault, Nuance Communications, USA: tetreaul@gmail.com

The committee has an email list address: acl17cc@aclweb.org .

Call for bids appears at https://www.aclweb.org/website/node/438.

Two bids have been received so far: one from Calgary and the other from Buenos Aires.

1. Pushpak will see about Laura sending a good bid from Argentina (disussions going on).

2. The successful ACL Sweden bid has been sent to Laura who is working on the Buenos Aires Bid.

3. The Calgary bid has virtually been shelved due to LOC's difference in perception of how various commmittees for an ACL conference are formed from the way ACL conference committees are actually formed.

4. If the Argentina bid does not work out, Priscilla will work on hosting ACL 2017 in Chicago or Toronto.

5. In case of Argentina bid shaping up well, a site visit to Buenos Aires will be warranted.

6. The feasible time for announcing ACL 2017 now seems to be EMNLP 2015 in August.
