The main activity of the SIG is the organization of the biennial meeting “Mathematics of Language (MoL)”. The previous meeting, MoL 13, was held as a workshop in connection with ACL 2013 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The next meeting, MoL 14, will be held in Chicago July 25–26 ([https://lucian.uchicago.edu/blogs/mol2015/ website for the meeting]); the local organizer is Greg Kobele. The meeting received 22 submissions, 12 of which were accepted for presentation. One accepted paper was subsequently retracted. The proceedings of the meeting will be ingested into the ACL Anthology.

The SIG awards the S.-Y. Kuroda Prize for lasting contributions to the mathematics of language. The award process is controlled by a SIG by-law. In its inaugural year the prize was awarded to Aravind K. Joshi, Vijay K. Shanker, and David Weir ([http://www.molweb.org/award-2013.html award statement]). The awardee for the 2015 prize has been selected and will be announced in connection with MoL 14.

Its current officers are president Marco Kuhlmann (Linköping University, Sweden) and vice president Makoto Kanazawa (National Institute of Informatics, Japan). Their terms end at the next business meeting of the SIG, which will be held in connection with MoL 14. At this time the vice president will take over the duties of the president, and the outgoing president will take over the duties of the vice president, until a new vice president will be elected at the end of 2015/beginning of 2016.

The workshop had 15 registered participants, although the number of attendants was considerably higher, especially during the invited talk, which was given by Mark Johnson. For the first time, the proceedings of MoL have been made available in the ACL Anthology (http://www.aclweb.org/anthology/sigmol.html). The next meeting, MoL 14, will be held in 2015. The location and date of that meeting will be determined during the fall of 2014.

=== Kuroda Prize ===

At ACL 2013, András Kornai, James Rogers, Gerald Penn, and Anssi Yli-Jyrä gave a SIG-endorsed full-day tutorial on “The Mathematics of Language Learning”. They decided to donate part of their remuneration for that tutorial to found a prize that commemorates “lasting contributions to the mathematics of language”, and to award the prize, which they named after [http://ling.ucsd.edu/kuroda/ S.-Y. Kuroda], to Aravind K. Joshi, Vijay K. Shanker, and David Weir ([http://www.molweb.org/award-2013.html award statement]). The award was presented in January 2014 during a (SIG-endorsed) Special Session on Mathematical Theories of Natural Language Processing, which was held as part of the International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics (ISAIM).

Future Kuroda prizes will be awarded by the SIG, which has adopted a by-law with rules and regulations that control the award procedure.

SIGMOL is the ACL special interest group dedicated to mathematical linguistics, which refers to the study of mathematical structures and methods that are of importance to the study of language.

As of 2013-07-16 SIGMOL has 263 members. Its current officers are:
* president András Kornai (Hungarian Academy of Sciences)
* vice president Marco Kuhlmann (Uppsala University, Sweden)
The terms of the current officers end on 2013-08-09, when the next business meeting of SIGMOL will be held. At this time the vice president takes over the duties of the president, and the outgoing president takes over the duties of the vice president, until a new vice president will be elected in 2014.

The main activity of the SIG is the organization of the biennial meeting “Mathematics of Language”. The next meeting, MoL 13, will be collocated – for the first time – with ACL, and will thus take place in Sofia, Bulgaria. András Kornai and Marco Kuhlmann are the program chairs. The meeting attracted 17 submissions, 1 of which was withdrawn during the review period. Out of these, 10 submissions were selected for presentation at the meeting, giving an acceptance rate of 59%. In connection with the last elections, we polled the membership on several issues critical to the future of the group, including publication outlets and meeting venues – for a summary see http://kornai.com/straw.pdf. Two clusters of opinion emerged, roughly along the theoretical math/applied math dimension, and we had two candidates for next president running on platforms well-aligned with the respective cluster centers. After the matter was put to vote, the SIG elected Marco Kuhlmann with 54% of the votes. We see this as a mandate for closer integration with the ACL. The collocation of MoL 13 with ACL 2013 is a first step in this direction.

SIGMOL is the ACL special interest group dedicated to mathematical linguistics, which refers to the study of mathematical structures and methods that are of importance to the study of language. The main activity of the SIG is the organization of the biennial conference “Mathematics of Language”.

As of 2012-06-15 SIGMOL has 236 members. Its current officers are:
* president András Kornai (Boston University, USA)
* vice president Marco Kuhlmann (Uppsala University, Sweden)
The term of the president extends from one biennial meeting to the next, at which time the vice president takes over the duties of the president, and the outgoing president takes over the duties of the vice president, until a new vice president is elected in the year after the biennial meeting. The next elections will be held in 2014.

The last biennial meeting of SIGMOL (MOL 12) was held in Nara, Japan, 6–8 September, 2011. The program chair was Marcus Kracht (Bielefeld University, Germany). The local organizing committee was co-chaired by Makoto Kanazawa (National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo) and Hiroyuki Seki (Nara Institute of Science and Technology). The program committee accepted 13 papers, 1 of which was withdrawn after acceptance. Invited talks were given by Kit Fine (New York University, USA) and Andreas Maletti (University of Stuttgart, Germany).
