==Inaugural Dissertation Award==

We also launched the Dissertation Award, in collaboration with the ACL Executive Committee. We’d like to thank everyone who participated and supported this new initiative. The winning dissertation will be adapted for publication in the journal.
==New Paper Categories==

We made some updates to the paper categories:

- Short papers are now capped at 20 pages.

- Long papers typically go up to 40 pages.

And we added a new Position Papers category. Two have already been accepted, and one will be presented at ACL 2025.

==Enhanced Review Process==

New review forms and updated author and reviewer guidelines will go into effect next month.

==Enhanced Outreach==

We’ve also enhanced our outreach. The community can now follow us @CompLingJournal on X and Bluesky for announcements and updates.

==Inaugural Dissertation Award==

We also launched the Dissertation Award, in collaboration with the ACL Executive Committee. We’d like to thank everyone who participated and supported this new initiative. The winning dissertation will be adapted for publication in the journal.

The journal reached a significant milestone by the end of 2024 (50th anniversary). We released an editorial ("Opening a New Chapter for Computational Linguistics") to celebrate this special moment, and introduced new changes to the journal by setting a fresh vision.

==New Changes==

- We have released new Latex style files to better support papers with long author lists (which is increasingly common today).

- We now have social media accounts on X and Bluesky (@CompLingJournal). Information such as journal news and latest issues will be shared there.

- We have been actively expanding our roster of action editors and reviewers to meet the growing reviewing cycle demands.

- We are launching distinguished publication programs to showcase significant and impactful work published in the journal.

- We are introducing 'position papers' as a new category to facilitate discussions on future research directions.

- Together with ACL ExCo, we have launched the "Computational Linguistics Dissertation Award" for our community. In the inaugural call, we received 29 nominations. The selection committee comprises Jason Eisner (NAACL), Julia Hockenmaier (NAACL), Yang Liu (AACL), Alice Oh (AACL), Ivan Titov (EACL), and Anna Korhonen (EACL). Kathy McKeown has also agreed to chair the process. The first award will be presented at ACL 2025.

In July 2024, we successfully transitioned with a major software upgrade, the first in some time. The transition was seamless and resulted in minimal loss of time for authors, reviewers or editors.
CL has seen an increase in the number of submissions for 2024. Specifically:

- We have expanded our list of action editors and standing reviewers. We have also implemented strategies to recruit reliable and committed members of the community to our editorial board (e.g., working together with ARRs).

==Major Upgrade==
In July 2024, we successfully transitioned with a major software upgrade, the first in some time. The transition was seamless and resulted in minimal loss of time for authors, reviewers or editors.

==CL submission numbers are growing and the editorial team responds==
CL has seen an increase in the number of submissions for 2024. Specifically:

Total number of active submissions in 2023 - 218
Total number of active submissions in 2024 - 273

The action editors and reviewers have been outstanding in keeping pace and we would like to acknowledge the fantastic work of all those who have contributed to CL, including authors, reviewers, action editors and editorial staff.

The journal reached a significant milestone by the end of 2024 (50th anniversary). We released an editorial ("Opening a New Chapter for Computational Linguistics") to celebrate this special moment, and introduced new changes to the journal by setting a fresh vision.

Highlights:

- We have released new Latex style files to better support papers with long author lists (which is increasingly common today).

- We now have social media accounts on X and Bluesky (@CompLingJournal). Information such as journal news and latest issues will be shared there.
We are now setting a new vision for the journal. Specifically, we aspire for it to evolve into a leading venue for both classical computational linguistics and modern natural language processing, with a focus on language models.

To this end, we have introduced several changes. First, we upgraded our journal system, which now offers new features and better support compared to the previous system.

We have also appointed Cindy Robinson as our new Editorial Assistant at CL. Together, we have been expanding our editorial team, including Action Editors and Standing Reviewers -- this process is ongoing.

Additionally, we are rolling out a new tiered reviewing system, allocating reviewers' time based on the estimated workload required for each review.

We are also finalizing a new LaTeX template to accommodate a larger number of authors more elegantly.

Finally, we are improving our marketing efforts. Specifically, each member registered with the CL journal system will automatically receive information about the latest published papers as soon as they are available. Our next goal is to extend this reach to all members of the ACL community.
