A number of chairs are in place:

General Chair: Hinrich Schuetze (University of Stuttgart).

Local Chair: Svetla Koeva (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences).

Program Co-Chairs: Pascale Fung (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) and Massimo Poesio (University of Essex).

A contract with the targeted venue was signed - the National Palace of
Culture in Sofia - http://www.ndk.bg/?langid=2
A contract between the ACL and the Institute for Bulgarian (Department of
Computational Linguistics) at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences - local
organizer, was signed, too.
Four different designs for the ACL 2013 web site were developed; at the
moment the work is concentrated on the one selected by the members of the
LOC.

We had hoped to be able to announce the location at ACL-2011 but that seems unlikely now. A site visit will be planned just before/after EMNLP, and the decision should be announced soon thereafter.

We are also behind schedule on the selection of chairs but hopefully that will be completed soon after EMNLP.

Ken Church talked with Prof. Maosong Sun from Tshinghua University during COLING last year. Maosong agreed to be a chair.

Location: TBD. Possibilities: (1) Tsinghua University, (2) Beijing Language and Culture University and (3) Harbin Institute of Technology.

- Need to invite a co-chair.

- Sponsorships & Local Support: CIPS (Chinese Information Processing Society of China) agreed to support the summer school. Some local professors also promised to give their support to us.

- Haifeng talked with Dr. Ming Zhou from Microsoft (MSRA). Ming agreed to support the summer school.

- Many other possibilities.

- Since SIGIR will be in Beijing on 24-28 July this year, and EMNLP overlaps with the end of SIGIR, We suggest that the summer school would be held just before SIGIR.

- Haifeng talked with Prof. Jian-Yun Nie, who is the general chair of SIGIR this year. He was also interested in the summer school. He said he will discuss with SIGIR to see whether they would co-organize the summer school.

- QUESTIONS: (1) ACL Sponsorship? (2) Is it appropriate for to co-organize the summer school with SIGIR?

More details will to be worked out later.

• May 28, 2011 - Final bids due

• June 28, 2011 - Bid selected

The ACL 2013 organizing committee consists of 9 members, including members of the ACL executive committee and members nominated by EACL.
