== Workshop ==

The 22nd SIG workshop was held at NAACL 2025, organized by Garrett Nicolai, Eleanor Chodroff, Çağrı Çöltekin, and Fred Mailhot. Attendance was approximately 30 participants, in-person and online. Attendance has been slowly decreasing, and this year, we held a discussion with members to discuss ways to increase interest in the SIG.

In line with reduced attendance, there were only 4 papers submitted to the workshop; after careful review, all 4 were accepted. After polling the community in the summer of 2024, and receiving comments at the low quality of reviews in previous workshops, efforts were made to improve review quality. The organizing team reviewed the reviews, and noted an improvement in review quality; however, since reviewer load was quite low, this may have contributed to the improvement more than any other effort.

Kyle Gorman of CUNY was invited to give a shared talk, and was also invited to participate in a community panel on the state of the SIG with Kristine Yu (UMass - Amherst), Gaspar Begus (UC - Berkeley), and Connor Mayer (UC - Irvine)

== Shared Tasks ==

After poor participation in the previous year, there were no shared tasks this year. We are looking to reinvigorate the shared tasks in the next edition of the workshop.

== Elections ==

The officers of the SIG are listed on the website: https://sigmorphon.github.io/. Officers were re-elected in January 2025, and will serve for a 2-year term, with the next election to occur in late 2026.

The 21st SIG workshop was held at NAACL 2024, organized by Garrett Nicolai, Eleanor Chodroff, Çağrı Çöltekin, and Fred Mailhot. Attendance was approximately 30 participants, in-person and online. This is a decrease in attendance, and we will be investigating ways that we can increase participation.

The 2023 Workshop had 15 submissions (a decrease of 33% over the previous year) from which the program committee selected 9 for publication (60% acceptance rate). There were two invited talks: Naomi Feldman, and Jian Zhu. The workshop was held in a hybrid format, with both live attendees at NAACL, and virtual attendees via Zoom.

== Shared Tasks ==

In 2024, SIGMORPHON held an open solicitation for shared tasks, selecting 3. Each task was separately proposed by an organizing committee, and separately approved by the SIG Executive Committee, who worked with the organizing committee in some cases. This structure was inspired by other groups (SIGSEM and SIGNLL) that run multiple shared tasks, and we expect to keep it in future years. For the first time, the shared tasks were separated from the main workshop, with a separate volume of the proceedings devoted to the shared tasks, and a virtual event for participants.

=== Shared Tasks ===

SIGMORPHON's Ninth installment of its inflection generation shared task concentrated on the efficient generation of morphological paradigms, simulating the work done in field linguistics.

The second installment of its subword tokenization shared task concentrated on the segmentation of words into subword units using small language models.

The third installment of its G2P shared task concentrated on multilingual grapheme-to-phoneme prediction, but unfortunately, did not receive any submissions.

== Elections ==

The officers of the SIG are listed on the website: https://sigmorphon.github.io/. Officers are serving a 2-year term, and the next election cycle will begin at the end of 2024.

== Workshop ==

The 19th SIG workshop was held at NAACL 2022, organized by Garrett Nicolai and Eleanor Chodroff. The workshop has successfully converted from a biennial workshop to an annual one. This is especially important now as our community is undergoing rapid growth.

The 2022 Workshop had 18 submissions from which the program committee selected 10 for publication (56% acceptance rate). There were two invited talks: Laura Gwilliams, and Gasper Begus. The workshop was held in a hybrid format, with both live attendees at NAACL, and virtual attendees via Zoom.

== Shared Tasks ==

In 2022, SIGMORPHON held an open solicitation for shared tasks, selecting 3. Each task was separately proposed by an organizing committee, and separately approved by the SIG Executive Committee, who worked with the organizing committee in some cases. This structure was inspired by other groups (SIGSEM and SIGNLL) that run multiple shared tasks, and we expect to keep it in future years.

=== Task 0 ===

SIGMORPHON's seventh installment of its inflection generation shared task is divided
into two parts: Re-inflection, and acquisition trajectories.

In the first part, participants designed a model that learned to generate morphological inflections from a lemma and a set of morphosyntactic features of the target form.

In the second part, instead of predicting well-formedness of nonce word forms, systems were instead evaluated on their ability to generalize over naturalistic low-resource inputs. The organizers prepared data to determine systems' learning trajectories and compare them against the wealth of data that has been collected about human learning trajectories for three famous problems: English past tense, German noun plurals, and Arabic noun plurals.

=== Task 1 ===

The SIGMORPHON shared task on grapheme-to-phoneme conversion expanded on the task from last year, with new languages and data.

=== Task 2 ===
Task 2 was new to this year’s workshop, and involved the segmentation of words into morphemes in both contextual and context-free scenarios.

=== Membership drive ===
A bug in the Google group was discovered, which was automatically rejecting new members; once this bug was fixed, we saw membership increase by more than 10%. We are now expecting to conduct a membership drive in the coming year.

== Elections ==

The elected officers of the SIG are listed at [https://sigmorphon.github.io/], and are serving a 2-year term. The next elections are scheduled to take place in January, 2023.

== Workshop ==

The 20th SIG workshop was held at ACL 2023, organized by Garrett Nicolai, Eleanor Chodroff, Çağrı Çöltekin, and Fred Mailhot. Attendance was approximately 30 participants in person, with another 30 participating online. This is especially important now as our community is undergoing rapid growth.

The 2023 Workshop had 22 submissions (an increase of 22% over the previous year) from which the program committee selected 12 for publication (55% acceptance rate). There were two invited talks: Carmen Saldana, and Kyle Gorman. The workshop was held in a hybrid format, with both live attendees at NAACL, and virtual attendees via Zoom.

== Shared Tasks ==

In 2023, SIGMORPHON held an open solicitation for shared tasks, selecting 3, with one eventually retracting due to time constraints. Each task was separately proposed by an organizing committee, and separately approved by the SIG Executive Committee, who worked with the organizing committee in some cases. This structure was inspired by other groups (SIGSEM and SIGNLL) that run multiple shared tasks, and we expect to keep it in future years.

=== Task 0 ===

SIGMORPHON's eighth installment of its inflection generation shared task was divided
into three parts.

In the first part, participants designed a model that learned to generate morphological inflections from a lemma and a set of morphosyntactic features of the target form.

In the second part, participants were tasked with generating reasonable inflectional responses to a Wug task in Korean.

In the third part, participants produce models that fail in ways similar to children - ie, the aim was to imitate child learning of morphology.

=== Task 1 ===

For the first time, we presented a shared task on interlinear glossing, with two sub-tracks:

In the first, participants must automatically gloss lower-resource data using only the source sentence and potentially a matrix translation (ie, English or Spanish).

In the second, the participants also have access to a morphological segmentation of the source text.

== Elections ==

2023 represented an election of new officers to the SIG, who are listed on the website: https://sigmorphon.github.io/. Officers are serving a 2-year term, with the next election cycle to begin at the end of 2024.
