== Summary ==

SIGFSM traditionally meets at its main conference FSMNLP, which is held biennally (last in 2019 in Dresden, Germany; next one was scheduled 2021 and 2023 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, but was cancelled both times due to Covid and low participation). Our meetings typically attract 40-50 participants and are organized as satellite workshops of major meetings or stand-alone conferences. The premier conference FSMNLP is usually stand-alone and held at locations where the local research community is involved in developing or using finite-state techniques. Unfortunately, FSMNLP 2021, which was scheduled for late 2021 in Stellenbosch, South Africa under the auspices of Bruce Watson, had to be cancelled due to the uncertainties related to Covid lockdowns. In 2023 another attempt to hold FSMNLP in Stellenbosch co-located with IJCAI was started, but IJCAI moved to Macau on short notice and the response to the nevertheless issued call-for-papers was minimal. In the interest of all parties FSMNLP 2023 was also canceled.

SIGFSM has suffered major setbacks due to Covid and activities have significantly slowed. We intend to improve community activities. All recent event proceedings have been published in the ACL Anthology. We also support the import of older proceedings, but we solely depend on the program committee chairs of those former conferences to supply the required information. We joined efforts with the TAG+ community to collocate our premier meetings and to foster more communication and collaboration between the two communities. Despite the current stand-alone nature of FSMNLP, we might consider running it as an ACL satellite event to make it more visible, to make it widely accessible at a lower cost, and to reduce the overhead work in organization.

In 2024, the membership count of SIGFSM remains stable at 131. The last recruit drive at FSMNLP 2019 was successful, but we had no events in 2020-2024. We use our meetings to actively recruit new members and hope to attract new members at the next FSMNLP.

== Officers ==

The currently elected officers started their 3-year term on August 1, 2020. It is still planned to discuss the removal of the position of Treasurer at the next FSMNLP in 2025. Electronic elections will be held in 2024 to compensate for the elections that were planned at FSMNLP 2023.

== Summary ==

SIGFSM traditionally meets at its main conference FSMNLP, which is held biennally (last in 2019 in Dresden, Germany; next one was scheduled 2021 and 2023 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, but was cancelled both times due to Covid and low participation). Our meetings typically attract 40-50 participants and are organized as satellite workshops of major meetings or stand-alone conferences. The premier conference FSMNLP is usually stand-alone and held at locations where the local research community is involved in developing or using finite-state techniques. In 2019 we met in Dresden, Germany (September 23-25) under the auspices of Heiko Vogler. Unfortunately, the next FSMNLP, which was scheduled for late 2021 in Stellenbosch, South Africa under the auspices of Bruce Watson, had to be cancelled due to the uncertainties related to Covid lockdowns. In 2023 another attempt to hold FSMNLP in Stellenbosch co-located with IJCAI was started, but IJCAI moved to Macau on short notice and the response to the still-issued call-for-papers was minimal. In the interest of all parties FSMNLP 2023 was unfortunately canceled.

We continue growing SIGFSM into a more active community. All recent event proceedings (FSMNLP 2011-2019, ATANLP 2010-2012, MORPHFSM 2014, and StatFSM 2016) have been published in the ACL Anthology. We also support the import of older proceedings, but we solely depend on the program committee chairs of those former conferences to supply the required information. We joined efforts with the TAG+ community to collocate our premier meetings (as evidenced by the joint meeting in 2017) and to foster more communication and collaboration between the two communities. Despite the current stand-alone nature of FSMNLP, we might consider running it as an ACL satellite event to make it more visible, to make it widely accessible at a lower cost, and to reduce the overhead work in organization.

== Membership ==

In 2023, the membership count of SIGFSM remains stable at 131. The last recruit drive at FSMNLP 2019 (September 23-25, 2019 in Dresden, Germany) was successful, but we had no events in 2020-2023. We use our meetings to actively recruit new members and hope to attract new members at the next FSMNLP.

== Officers ==

The currently elected officers started their 3-year term on August 1, 2020. It is still planned to discuss the removal of the position of Treasurer at the next FSMNLP in 2024 or 2025. Electronic elections will be held in 2023 to compensate for the elections that were planned at FSMNLP 2023.

=== FSMNLP ===
*FSMNLP 2019 was held September 23-25, 2019 in Dresden, Germany. Frank Drewes (Umeå University, Sweden) and Kilian Gebhardt (University of Technology Dresden, Germany) gave the keynote lectures. Frank reported on "Recent Advances in Efficient Parsing for Graph Grammars" and Kilian spoke about "Latent Variable Grammars for Discontinuous Parsing". As usual, there was a tutorial that introduced a particular research area. More precisely, Aarne Ranta (University of Gothenburg, Sweden) introduced "Grammatical Framework: an Interlingual Grammar Formalism".

*The last FSMNLP/SIGFSM business meeting was held on September 24, 2019 at FSMNLP in Dresden, Germany.
*The next business meeting will be held in 2021 at FSMNLP in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

*The fourth SIGFSM elections are currently running (July 2020). The current officers, who took over on January 1, 2013, were relected and will thus remain in office until the end of 2018. The results of the election will be published end of July 2020.

== Financial Report ==

SIGFSM has no savings worth mentioning. All meetings are organized with local funds or funds collected during registration. Indeed it is planned to discuss the further need for a SIGFSM treasurer with the membership at the next business meeting in 2021.

== Summary ==

Currently, SIGFSM is actively meeting at two workshops, the main conference FSMNLP, which is now held biennally, and the endorsed special-interest workshop ATANLP. It is planned to have a joint meeting with SIGMORPHON in 2014. ATANLP is a one-day workshop on applications of tree automata and was held twice in conjunction with ACL meetings (ACL 2010 and EACL 2012). The main conference FSMNLP typically attracts 30-50 participants and is organized as a stand-alone conference at locations where the local research community is involved in developing or using finite-state techniques.

We are still trying to grow SIGFSM into a more coherent and active community. We now publish proceedings of our events (FSMNLP 2011,2012,2013 and ATANLP 2010,2012) in the ACL Anthology, but it remains a challenge to import the proceedings of older workshops into the ACL Anthology. As indicated, we decided to hold FSMNLP biennally from now on and we will consider running FSMNLP as ACL conference satellite events in order to make FSMNLP more visible to outsiders, to make FSMNLP widely accessible, and to reduce the overhead work in workshop organization.

== Membership ==

In 2013, the membership count of the SIGFSM is slowly growing, but still well below 100. We will recruit new members at the next FSMNLP meeting (July 15-17, 2013) at St. Andrews, Scotland (UK). From now on, we plan to actively recruit new members at all organized and endorsed events. Approx. 200 people currently receive the meeting announcements.

* FSMNLP 2013 will be held July 15-17, 2013 in St. Andrews, Scotland (UK). We look forward to invited talks of Alexander Clark (King's College London) and Bill Byrne (University of Cambridge). We have accepted 8 long and 9 short contributed papers for presentation. Traditionally, locals introduce their research area in tutorials and we will have 3 tutorials this time.

* FSMNLP 2012 was held July 23-25, 2012 in Donostia (San Sebastian), Spain. Kimmo Koskenniemi (University of Helsinki, Finland) gave the invited talk. We accepted 7 long papers and 12 short papers for presentation and the final proceedings were published in the ACL Anthology at [http://aclweb.org/anthology-new/sigfsm.html]. As usual, we had 3 tutorials introducing the local research to the community.

* FSMNLP 2011 was organized in Blois, France, jointly with CIAA 2011 (Conference on Implementation and Applications of Automata) because the organizers and the dates of both events were close enough. 14 long and 3 short papers were accepted for presentation. In terms of participation, the CIAA/FSMNLP 2011 in Blois was a very successful event: [http://ciaa-fsmnlp-2011.univ-tours.fr/ciaa/page.php?nom=home&id=1] (see the picture). === SIGFSM Business Meetings ===

* The FSMNLP/SIGFSM business meeting will be held on July 16, 2013 in St. Andrews. Future FSMNLP venues (next one in 2015) will be discussed there.

* There were repeated expressions of shared interest towards a joint workshop with SIGFSM and SIGMORPHON. It was concluded that such plans would be best realized in an ACL hosted main conference. We currently plan to hold such a joint event in 2014.

* SIGFSM endorsed the EACL 2012 Workshop on Applications of Tree Automata Techniques in Natural Language Processing (ATANLP 2012).
