The Global Security Initiative at Arizona State University is an interdisciplinary hub facilitating research on wicked problems affecting national security. In an effort to develop theories, methods and tools to address the national security risks associated with narrative, disinformation and strategic influence, the GSI seeks to expand its research team with a research scientist well-versed in computational linguistics, data analysis and/or machine learning. Initially, the primary project this position will focus on is an Office of Naval Research funded effort studying adversarial framing in the information environment. The ultimate goal is an automated, unsupervised means of detecting framing and correctly categorizing the instances of framing.

Long-term, the role of the Research Scientist position is to identify research opportunities and pursue research efforts that develop scientific tools to allow analysts and decision-makers to dynamically analyze discourse in mainstream and social media; and also interact with other research teams to integrate these results into analyses of the information environment, including a real-time modeling and also simulation environments.

Essential duties:

  • Conduct independent research under minimal supervision

We have one fully-funded PhD position at the Language Technology Group, University of Oslo. The position is funded by the CLEANUP project funded by the Research Council of Norway.

CLEANUP is an exciting research project at the intersection of natural language processing and data privacy and aims to develop a range of new machine learning methods to automatically anonymise (or at least strongly de-identify) text documents such as electronic patient records, court rulings or chat-based interactions with customers.

The project brings together researchers from machine learning, natural language processing, computational privacy, statistical modelling, health informatics and IT law. In addition, partners from the Norwegian public and private sector (covering the fields of healthcare, welfare, banking, insurance and legal publishing) will contribute to the project with their data and domain knowledge.

The position is located within the Language Technology Group (LTG) at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo. LTG conducts research on a range of NLP topics like semantic parsing, distributional semantics, sentiment analysis, clinical NLP, and more. While the research profile of the group is heavily machine-learning oriented, our projects typically combines data-driven approaches with an interest for linguistic analysis and insight. The Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta seeks exceptional candidates for a post-doctoral appointment to be held jointly in the Fyshe and EdTeKLA research groups. The appointment will initially be for a one-year term and will be renewable for an additional year subject to availability of funding and satisfactory performance. The post-doctoral appointee will work on activities related to the computational modeling stream of a large collaborative grant that aims to better understand the language development and literacy.

The person filling this position will work with Alona Fyshe and Carrie Demmans Epp on projects concerning models of the second language acquisition. Research may include:

  • language modeling,
  • deep learning, including training large models using GPUs
  • possible analysis of neuro-imaging data (e.g., fMRI or EEG).

Candidates must have demonstrated expertise in machine learning and natural language processing (NLP). Backgrounds in cognitive psychology, language acquisition, bilingual language, and literacy, among others, are advantageous. Summer internship in language technology, Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Vienna

The Language and Interaction Technologies Group of the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI) in Vienna is seeking a student intern for programming tasks in the field of natural language processing.

The successful applicant will be responsible for helping to program the front and back ends of an interactive, graphical tool for computer-assisted translation of creative language. The work will be carried out in close cooperation with the project leader, within the framework of the FWF-funded project Computational Pun-derstanding: https://punderstanding.ofai.at/

The position is a fixed-term one-month contract for 20 hours per week, with the possibility to extend the contract for additional months, subject to project requirements and satisfactory job performance. Postdoctoral Fellow Position in NLP in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine, New York City

A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Dr. Yifan Peng's laboratory in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine, starting Fall 2020. Our laboratory is primarily interested in developing and applying computational approaches to biomedical text data and medical images. Our research has focused on biomedical text mining (e.g., BlueBERT, NegBio, LitVar), medical image analysis (e.g., NIH Chest X-ray, DeepSeeNet), and their combination (e.g., TieNet). The successful applicant will work on a NIH-funded project. The goal of this research project is to use radiology-specific ontology, NLP, image analysis, and DL to construct a radiology-specific knowledge graph. The Artificial Intelligence Research Centre, Japan and the National Centre for Text Mining (UK) invite applications for two Research Fellows in Natural Language Processing. This is an exciting opportunity for two ambitious researchers to work on a major interdisciplinary project on Cancer, funded by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development. The posts aim to promote novel research into information extraction and knowledge discovery for immunotherapy for cancer mechanisms. The two fellows will work together and will also collaborate with NLP researchers both in Japan and in the UK, as well as with data scientists and medical practitioners in Japan.

Description of the project:
The successful candidate will work within the frame of a project, funded by the Brussels government, on NLP for healthcare. The project will acquire data from one of the largest hospitals in Brussels (UZ Brussels) and its aim is to perform automated clinical coding and nosocomial outbreak detection. To do so, two important aspects will be investigated: (i) multilingual NLP techniques and (ii) interpretation of NLP models to address tasks such as extreme classification and real-time prediction.

Responsibilities:
• Design and implement innovative algorithms within the aforementioned project,
• Publish the results at top-tier venues in NLP (e.g., ACL) and machine learning (e.g., ICLR), and
• Supervise junior researchers and support in teaching.

Profile and requirements:
• A PhD degree focusing on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing or related;
• An excellent academic record with publications in top-tier scientific journals (e.g., TACL) and conference proceedings (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, AAAI);
• Proven programming experience (e.g., Python, C++);
• Fluency in state-of-the-art machine learning frameworks (e.g., Tensorflow, PyTorch);
• Fluency in English and excellent scientific writing and presentation skills;

We have a vacancy for a permanent research position in language technology at the Norwegian Computing Center (NR) in Oslo, Norway. We seek candidates with broad expertise in the field of NLP and the ability to work on different types of R&D projects. The position will be associated with the SAMBA research department, which currently has 45 researchers.

The researcher will be expected to participate in several research projects. In particular, we have recently initiated a large interdisciplinary research project on anonymization of textual data in collaboration with legal scholars, data security experts and researchers in health informatics. We also conduct research on spoken dialogue systems, human-robot interaction, multilingual language resources and information extraction on large amounts of texts. We also work closely with the University of Oslo, and many of our research projects are carried out in collaboration with various research groups in Norway and internationally.

You must be interested in applied research in language technology and machine learning. The applicant must hold a doctorate in language technology or computational linguistics, or a master degree combined several years of research experience. In addition, you must have good programming skills and the ability to work both independently and in teams.

Applicants must be fluent in English, both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is an advantage, as several of our research projects focus on Norwegian text data. Experience in securing funding for R&D projects is also appreciated.

as part of the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE [1]. We are part of the research mission "SenPAI-Security and Privacy in AI". While AI becomes more common as a tool for various security applications where data must be analysed, clustered or attributed, the security of the applied AI algorithms is often limited. Various research results in the past years show shortcomings of trained neural nets (NN) like the lack of robustness against targeted attacks. The focus of our contribution to SenPAI is in (i) An automatic penetration testing system for NLP: A modular toolkit with common strategies to attack NLP models. This toolkit allows the wide-spread evaluation of state-of-the-art and in-production NLP systems; and (ii) Robust training objectives for NLP systems: State-of-the-art learning systems are equipped with the automatic attack toolkit in order to generate more robust NLP models. The goal is to have NLP models which are robust against new, unseen attacks and which require a higher effort to bypass them.

For this project, we are looking to hire a PostDoc or a PhD student with both a strong background in Natural Language Processing and a strong interest to contribute to applied security. We plan to cooperate with Fraunhofer SIT in Darmstadt and several other machine learning labs involved in SenPAI.
