== News ==

=== October 30, 2006 ===

A WIKI FOR COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS

The ACL has created a new wiki specifically for Computational Linguistics:

http://aclweb.org/aclwiki

The purpose of this wiki is to facilitate the sharing of information on all aspects of Computational Linguistics.

Wikipedia contains some excellent articles on Computational Linguistics, but the mandate of Wikipedia is to be an encyclopedia. This means that Wikipedia articles must be written for a general audience, not for specialists. It also means that content such as job ads and course outlines is not suitable for Wikipedia. Therefore this new wiki was created to fill a role that Wikipedia cannot fill.

You are all invited to visit the new wiki and to make your own contributions to the wiki. Anybody can edit the text in the ACL Wiki for Computational Linguistics by setting up an account and logging into the wiki.

The ACL thanks Dragomir Radev, Steven Bird, Ali Hakim, and Peter Turney for setting up the wiki.

==Using a template==
Templates are wiki pages which can be used in other pages in three ways:
:
<nowiki>{{Name}}</nowiki>
includes the current content of the page <nowiki>"[[Template:Name]]"</nowiki>.
:
<nowiki>{{subst:Name}}</nowiki>
inserts the content of the page <nowiki>"[[Template:Name]]"</nowiki> when you save your text.
:
<nowiki>{{msgnw:Name}}</nowiki>
includes the template in raw wiki syntax, like
<nowiki><nowiki></nowiki>
does
==Existing Templates==
Below is a list of existing templates that may be used:
===Textual Entailment Resource Pool Templates===
*
<nowiki>{{subst:TE Corpora}}</nowiki>

:used for adding a new ''corpus'' resource to the [[Textual Entailment Portal]].
*
<nowiki>{{subst:TE Knowledge Collections and Datasets}}</nowiki>

:used for adding a new ''knowledge collection'' or ''dataset'' resource to the [[Textual Entailment Portal]].
*
<nowiki>{{subst:TE Tools and Software}}</nowiki>

:used for adding a new ''tool'' or ''software'' resource to the [[Textual Entailment Portal]].

===Other Resource Templates (non-specific to any Portal)===
*
<nowiki>{{subst:Corpora}}</nowiki>

:used for adding a new ''corpus'' resource.
*
<nowiki>{{subst:Knowledge Collections and Datasets}}</nowiki>

:used for adding a new ''knowledge collection'' or ''dataset'' resource.
*
<nowiki>{{subst:Tools and Software}}</nowiki>

==Example for creating a new Textual Entailment Resource Page==

* Create a new page (see [[Help:Adding Content]]);
* In the edit box (where you add your content), include the following text:
:
<nowiki>{{subst:Name}}</nowiki>
, where
Name
is the name of the template you wish to include in your page;
* Save the page by clicking on the
Save
button;
* Edit the page (see [[Help:Editing Content]]) to add your specific content.

'''DIRT''' (Discovery of Inference Rules from Text) is both an algorithm and a resulting knowledge collection created by [[Dekang Lin]] and [[Patrick Pantel]] at the [[University of Alberta]]. The algorithm automatically learns paraphrase expressions from text using the [[Distributional Hypothesis]] over paths in [[Dependency Trees|dependency trees]]. A path, extracted from a parse tree, is an expression that represents a binary relationship between two nouns. In short, if two paths tend to link the same sets of words, DIRT hypothesizes that the meanings of the corresponding patterns are similar.

The DIRT knowledge collection is the output of the DIRT algorithm over a 1GB set of newspaper text (San Jose Mercury, Wall Street Journal and AP Newswire from the TREC-9 collection). It extracted 7 million paths from the parse trees (231,000 unique) from which paraphrases were generated. For example, here are the Top-20 paraphrases "X solves Y" generated by DIRT:

''Y is solved by X, X resolves Y, X finds a solution to Y, X tries to solve Y, X deals with Y, Y is resolved by X, X addresses Y, X seeks a solution to Y, X does something about Y, X solution to Y, Y is resolved in X, Y is solved through X, X rectifies Y, X copes with Y, X overcomes Y, X eases Y, X tackles Y, X alleviates Y, X corrects Y, X is a solution to Y, X makes Y worse, X irons out Y''

== Editing basics ==
===Review policy and conventions===
:Make sure that what you want to write belongs where you want to put it. The operator of the site likely has specific plans for the site, and your content might be deleted or unappreciated. You can always use the talk pages to ask questions or check to see if your idea will be accepted. Please make note of the [http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html GNU Free Documentation License 1.2] your contributions will be covered with.

===Start editing===
:To start editing an ACLWiki page, click the '''Edit this page''' (or just '''edit''') link at one of its edges. This brings you to the '''edit page''': a page with a text box containing the ''wikitext'': the editable source code from which the server produces the webpage.

===Type your changes===
:You can just type your text. However, also using basic wiki markup (described in the next section) to make links and do simple formatting adds to the value of your contribution.

===Summarize your changes===
:Write a short edit summary in the small field below the edit-box.

===Preview before saving===
:When you have finished, click '''Show preview''' to see how your changes will look -- '''before''' you make them permanent. Repeat the edit/preview process until you are satisfied, then click '''Save page''' and your changes will be immediately applied to the article.

==Most frequent wiki markup explained==

Here are the 6 most frequently used wiki markups. If you need more help, consult the WikiMedia [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents User's Guide]:

== Editing basics ==
===Review policy and conventions===

===Start editing===
:To start editing an ACLWiki page, click the '''Edit this page''' (or just '''edit''') link at one of its edges. This brings you to the '''edit page''': a page with a text box containing the ''wikitext'': the editable source code from which the server produces the webpage.

===Type your changes===
:You can just type your text. However, also using basic wiki markup (described in the next section) to make links and do simple formatting adds to the value of your contribution.

===Summarize your changes===
:Write a short edit summary in the small field below the edit-box.

===Preview before saving===
:When you have finished, click '''Show preview''' to see how your changes will look -- '''before''' you make them permanent. Repeat the edit/preview process until you are satisfied, then click '''Save page''' and your changes will be immediately applied to the article.

==Most frequent wiki markup explained==

Here are the 6 most frequently used wiki markups. If you need more help, consult the WikiMedia [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents User's Guide]:

== General principles ==

* '''Search''' to see '''whether''' someone has written a similar page before you start one yourself. Choose the title carefully.
* Review conventions of the project you are working in regarding e.g.:
**naming conventions.
**whether a separate page is justified; perhaps it is better to add the text to a related page (especially if the text is not very long); that page can always be split later, after it has grown.
* While creating the page and '''before''' saving it, check the ''What links here'' link on the creation page. Align the new content with existing links, or change the new title, or fix the other links.
* If nothing points to your new page, the page is isolated. Links to it will need to be added on other pages.

== Starting a page from a link, or after a search ==

To start a new page, you can click a link to the new page. This takes you to the edit mode of the non-existing blank page, which allows creation. You will not be able to create a new page unless you are logged in.

Another way to start a new page is to perform a search for the new title with the Go button (as you should have done before). When the search finds nothing, select "create the article".

Links to non-existing pages are common. They are typically created in preparation for creating the page, and/or to encourage other people to do so.
New page links are not really broken, as long as the name correctly identifies the intended content. (A new page link with a "wrong" or misspelled name, or that duplicates content found under another name is "broken", but in a different sense.)

New page links look different from links to existing pages (red links are new pages while blue links are existing pages).

Of course, you can also create the link yourself, in a related page, index page or your user page. However, it may be better to wait with creating links until after creating the new page, especially if the new link replaces one to an existing page. In this case, create the link but press Preview, instead of Save. From preview area, clicking the new link will create the new page (without updating the referring page).

== Starting a page through the URL ==

Using the browser address bar to enter a URL to a new page is an easy way to start the new page process. Easier still is
editing the pagename part of a URL for an existing page. Using the URL for the new page displays the default 'no article' message. The default page has the usual ''Edit this page'' link, which can be used to begin adding content.

For example, to create a new page for a resource called "My Great Resource", you could simply point your browser to the following address:

http://aclweb.org/aclwiki/index.php?title=My_Great_Resource

Note that spaces are replaced by underscores in the url.

== Creating an empty page ==
A '''new page''' is distinguished from a blank page: the latter has a history. Occasionally it is useful to create an empty page.

To create an empty page, save a page with the wikitext <nowiki>__END__</nowiki>. This code will not be saved, it just prevents refusal by the system to create an empty page. Alternatively, first create a non-empty page, e.g. with just one character, then edit the page to make it empty. A page with one or more blank spaces at the end, including a page only containing one or more blank spaces, is not possible.
